May 2021 Podcast Picks

This month, I listened to A LOT of podcasts. Between washing dishes and getting 10,000 steps a day, sometimes I listened to over 2 hours of podcasts! I found some cool new shows that I’ll keep listening to.

If I had my own podcast show, I feel like it would be just like Teach Me Something New with Brit Morin. Brit is the founder of the lifestyle media company, Brit + Co.  In her podcast, she interviews CEOs, actors, athletes, scientists, and a bunch of experts in their own fields. Here are three episodes included in this month’s playlist.

  • Decrypting Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, and NFTs with Nicole Lapin: Brit and Nicole explain cryptocurrency and related vocab words in a simple way and you’ll finally understand what all the fuss is about. Nicole talks about why you might want to invest and how much you should invest in this new currency.
  • Understanding Fertility with Modern Fertility CEO, Afton Vechery:  Fertility isn’t really a part of the reproductive system that is taught in school, and it seems like more people are struggling to getting pregnant and having kids. The women share their fertility journeys, break down stigmas, and answer some common fertility questions.
  • Credit Card Tips & Travel Hacks with Brian Kelly, AKA The Points Guy: If you aren’t getting points for your credit card spending, then what are you doing? Brian Kelly recommends some starter credit cards and how to work the credit card and airline industries.

Glennon Doyle | 4D with Demi Lovato
This is the second episode of Demi’s new podcast show. Demi’s life is playing out very similarly to Glennon’s, full of addiction and eating disorders and coming out – and they talk about it all on this episode! If you’re looking for something about human connection, this is the only thing you need to listen to.

Rasheed Philips: Philips Barbeque Co., The American Barbecue Showdown (Season 4 | Episode 3) | Atlanta Born & Raised
My mom and I recently watched The American Barbecue Showdown on Netflix. The challenges were pretty difficult and all the contestants were so nice! Rasheed was especially kind and was nicknamed the Gentleman Smoker. It was interesting to hear about the behind-the-scenes of the show and what his future plans were.

Living Zero Waste with Lauren Singer, Founder of Package Free Shop | Friend of a Friend
I had never heard of Package Free, but now I’m determined to buy most items from them when I move into my new apartment.  I loved learning about how Lauren Singer created her business and her take on living waste-free and green entrepreneurship.

I recently tried the Popeyes chicken sandwich and I enjoyed it! This food comedy podcast is mostly fun if you’re familiar with Los Angeles restaurants because the hosts compare the Popeyes sandwich to other sandwiches they’ve had.

People don’t have the same 9-5 pension-providing jobs they used to and saving for retirement looks a bit different these days.  This episode gives some advice on how to save for the future even with an unconventional career path.

OU#49 – Let’s Taco-bout Careers feat. Matt Prince | Opportunity Unknown
I met Matt Prince, a publicity manager at Taco Bell, a few years ago during a career excursion to the Taco Bell headquarters that was put on by my college.  I connected with him on LinkedIn after and have been following his new project to help young professionals, Net Net Synergy. In this episode, he provides some helpful tips on networking and staying on people’s radars.

22. Sal Khan: “If It Works for 15 Cousins, It Could Work for a Billion People.” | People I (Mostly) Admire
I used Khan Academy a lot when I was in high school AP classes. It has since expanded, but the services have stayed free, and Sal Khan shares how he created his company, his view on education, and the new school he created. Definitely an interesting listen!

Blood Money | Planet Money
The United States is one of the only countries that pays people for their blood plasma. This has given many people a few hundred extra dollars a month, and the US is the main supplier of plasma to the rest of the world. The episode explains why most countries won’t pay citizens for plasma and how COVID-19 has affected this industry.

How Instacart’s harsh ratings system hurts grocery deliverers | Recode Daily
I don’t frequently use grocery delivery apps, but it was interesting to hear how giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars to an Instacart driver really affects their success.

How Rabies Works | Stuff You Should Know
I didn’t know what happened if you contract rabies (it’s lethal!), but thankfully it is not very common in the US. However, there are still tens of thousands of people dying from it around the world, and you should definitely avoid raccoons, bats, and unfamiliar dogs in any country.  I learned a lot, but was kind of surprised the show didn’t talk about how expensive the treatment is in America.

This episode was just a good reminder to take chances and embrace the discomfort.

Anxiety: Is It Just Love Holding Its Breath? | We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle
I became obsessed with Glennon Doyle after reading Untamed, and I’m so glad she started a podcast. This episode focuses on her anxiety as an adult and specifically as a mother, and then she takes audience questions. She is so raw and genuine, and it’s always a relief to hear that you’re not alone struggling with anxiety.  I also love that each episode ends with the song that her daughter Tish wrote.
