Unpopular opinion, but I love setting New Year’s resolutions. I don’t know why people make them seem like such a bad thing. I think of them as just goals for the year. I’ve never been successful at completing all of them, but we all need stretch goals, and making progress toward a goal is better than doing nothing at all. From this year’s resolutions, I see a trend of improving my physical health. During the past few years of the pandemic, I’ve really had to focus on my mental health and getting through my anxiety, but now I want my body to feel strong. I had a morning and night routine during the pandemic while I was living in WA, and I really need to create one to stick to in Los Angeles this year.
- Drink a glass of water upon waking up
I have poor hydration habits, so I need to remedy this fast and have therefore made this a resolution and will be tracking it to keep myself accountable. I saw a tweet that called drinking water an “internal shower” and I like that comparison. - Complete my 5-Minute Journal daily
I bought the Five Minute Journal on Prime Day last year and I’m so excited to use it! - Limit my Instagram usage to 50mins a day
The time limit’s been set on my phone since 2021, but lately, I’ve been ignoring it and extending my time limit, so I’m going to try hard to not do that. Somewhere on Instagram I saw a user say to only go on social media with an intention. I do post content quite a bit, but I feel like half the time I open Instagram, I just scroll and scroll. - Floss every day
This was one of my resolutions from last year, and I’m going to try this one again. I had started out strong flossing every day, but after a month, I got lazy and didn’t do it every day, so it’s back on the resolutions list. - Lights out by 11pm every night
I have been working on getting more sleep, but I need to be more regimented about it. My tendency to stay up late and not get enough sleep is probably the root cause of most of my problems in life in general, so I’m making it my mission to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier than last year. - Exercise or get 5,000 steps four times a week
I struggled to exercise four times a week last year, but I plan on reactivating my gym membership and starting a ClassPass (check out my review of the 14-day free trial) plan so that should help. I want to get back to my pre-pandemic schedule of going to the gym 3x a week and then I can go on a walk or run once a week. - Volunteer once a month
I was always volunteering in high school and did Relay For Life club in college and it’s just something that I miss doing. I volunteered twice last year, and I want to find something I can be consistently involved in. - Vegetarian + eggs diet for 200 days (no meat, yes eggs)
I love meat, but I know it’s bad for the environment (and animals obviously). I’m allowing myself to eat eggs because I like them, and personally, it would be too hard for me to get enough protein being completely vegetarian. Last year, I didn’t buy meat from the grocery store 95% of the time, but I almost always ordered meat at restaurants. This year, I really want to try to order it less, but I’ll still eat it if we’re doing a family-style meal and meat is already on the table. - Finish 200 pages of my Spanish workbook by the end of the year
This is another resolution I’m re-committing to from last year. I’m going to figure out a way to incorporate this into my routine. - No peer-pressured or situation-pressured alcohol
This one shouldn’t be too hard for me since I don’t like the taste of alcohol, but I had been drinking a lot more at work events last year. I only had one alcoholic drink (guava beer) that I actually liked, so I need to stop ordering drinks just because they’re free or taking shots just because they were ordered for the table. I’ve truly never had a cocktail that tasted better than a mocktail, so catch me with a non-alcoholic beverage at all vendor events!
I’ve been using the Done app to track my progress, but haven’t liked the recent updates, so I may try another app like Streaks which is $5. It’s a daily habit tracker app and has widgets for Apple iPhones so you can see your progress every time you unlock your phone and keep your goals top of mind! Some people prefer crossing things off to-do lists or using the Reminders app, so do whatever method keeps you accountable!
