After two years of separation due to the pandemic, I finally reunited with my friends Dory Ann and Jordan for a sunset photo shoot in Malibu! The best thing about Southern California is without a doubt the weather, and I can’t get over how we can go to the beach in the winter without being freezing.
I met them at their apartment in North Hollywood, and then we drove to Malibu. First, we stopped at the Malibu Whole Foods and got sandwiches, Italian soda, and cookies for a sunset picnic.
There are a ton of different beaches all along Pacific Coast Highway. I’ve only been to a handful. Carbon Beach is nice, but it doesn’t have a set parking lot, so you just have to find parking along PCH which can be tricky. Corral Beach is nice because it’s at the end of a neighborhood, so you can usually find neighborhood parking. Paradise Cove Beach is a more private beach with a pier and costs $35 or $50 just to park on the weekend ($8 or $10 with restaurant validation at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe), so there aren’t too many people there. Zuma Beach has a huge paid parking lot, but the sand is a bit coarser. I like El Matador State Beach because of the cool rock formations, but it’s a pretty small beach/parking lot.
Dory Ann and Jordan had been coming to La Piedra State Beach, which is less than a mile away from El Matador, but a lot less crowded. The parking lot is pretty small, and since it’s a state beach, parking costs $8. We grabbed all of our stuff and took the trail to a little hike down to the beach and took a bunch of golden hour and sunset photos. Then, we ate and headed back up to the parking lot, since it closes at night.
It was a great night for a sunset photo shoot in Malibu, with clear skies and nighttime temperatures of 65 degrees. I tried to remember to take videos on my phone, in addition to iPhone photos and actual camera photos. It’s hard being a content creator lol! Then, I spent way too much time putting this Instagram Reel video together. It’s nothing fancy, but I like how it turned out!
